Baseball Division Descriptions

Westfield Little League offers a wide variety of divisions for league age 6-16 year olds. Descriptions for each division are below. Your child's league age determines which divisions they're eligible to play in. The Age Determination Date for a Little League Baseball player is the actual age of a child on August 31 of the current year.  

Baseball Age Chart

Rookie (Ages 6-8)

The Rookie Division includes all 6 year olds and 7-8 year olds not participating in the Farm or Instructional Divisions. The league was designed to provide players with a smooth transition from T-Ball to baseball. Games are played on a traditional Little League diamond. Players initially hit off tees before coach pitch is introduced. During practices, players cycle through stations in a fast-paced environment. A heavy emphasis is placed on fundamentals and FUN!

Instructional (Ages 7-9)

The Instructional Division includes advanced 7 year olds and  8-9 year olds not participating in the Wheeler or Farm Divisions. A strong emphasis is placed on fundamentals and basic strategy. Coaches are encouraged to balance playing time and rotate players to different positions. Games are played on a traditional Little League diamond. Coaches pitch at the beginning of the season, and players pitch as the year progresses. Teams typically play 1-2 games per week and practice at least once per week. The schedule includes approximately 15 games. All players are eligible to be selected to All-Star Teams.

Farm (Ages 8-10)

The Farm Division includes advanced 8 year olds and 9-10 year olds not participating in the Majors or Wheeler Divisions. A strong emphasis is placed on fundamentals and basic strategy. Coaches are encouraged to balance playing time and rotate players to different positions throughout the season. At the beginning of the season, both coaches and players pitch in games. The hope is to have players pitch exclusively by the end of the year. Teams typically play 1-2 games per week and practice at least once per week. The schedule includes approximately 15 games. All players are eligible to be selected to All-Star Teams.

Wheeler (Ages 9-12)

The Wheeler Division includes advanced 9 year olds and 10-12 year olds not drafted by Majors teams. Fundamentals and player development are stressed, while advanced baseball techniques and strategies are introduced. Teams typically play 2 games per week and practice at least once per week. The schedule includes a 14-18 game regular season and a postseason tournament. 9-11 year old players are eligible to be selected to All-Star Teams.

Majors (Ages 10-12)

The Majors Division is our most competitive for 10-12 year olds. Fundamentals are stressed, while advanced baseball techniques and strategies are re-enforced. Teams typically play 2-3 games per week and practice at least once per week. The schedule includes a 14-18 game regular season and a postseason tournament. All players are eligible to be selected to All-Star Teams.

Seniors (Ages 13-16)

The Senior Division is for 13-16 year olds. Games are played on a conventional 90-foot diamond with a pitching distance of 60 feet, 6 inches. Fundamentals are stressed, while advanced baseball techniques and strategies are re-enforced. Teams typically play 1-2 games per week and practice at least once per week. The schedule includes a 12-14 game regular season and typically involves some travel to nearby towns. There is a postseason tournament most years.
